A Tuscan Table
A Tuscan table is magic. When old friends and new bring fresh, local bounty, crafted into flavorful dishes, and place them to its center, the table becomes a unifying force.
An impromptu BBQ gathering in California is preceded by a ‘grab and go’ store bought side. Granted, it typically includes high quality Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s or deli prepackaged items (not a bad thing per say, I mean Costco does have the BEST jalepeño artichoke dip in the world!). While it is so fun to attend a potluck dinner, the ‘bring a dish to share’ is often a ‘ugh’ added to your already stressed out to-do list.
In Tuscany, however, it’s different. A last minute gathering in Tuscany is an opportunity to fling open the pantry, harvest your herb garden, forage your village for pears and walnuts and use up other fresh goodies you’ve purchased at the weekly market. No need to rush out for special shopping trips, you move about your day weaving your food prep in between other chores/work/to-dos. Crafting a dish or two that inspires you, you pour a little soul into your creation. More than a dish, it’s a gift to be shared and enjoyed.
Because everyone takes this approach, when the dishes arrive at the table, the already spectacular Tuscan light twinkles just a bit more. Each dish reflecting it’s own light and curating beaming smiles. “Oohs” and “Ahhs” join the chirps of birds and the last shrieks of cicadas for the day as everyone recognizes traditional favorites and new creations. The best of fresh, seasonal ingredients transformed into expected and non-expected delicacies patiently wait for the raised wine glasses and the toast to their beautiful bounty; then they are passed around the table in communal delight.
Stories, memories, shared passions fly around the table. Italian, English and some Itanglish punctuated with laughter, commiseration, and new ideas. More than food, the bounty of friendship is formed and reenforced.
